MANILA, Philippines--Even a simple members tournament of a golf club can help alleviate the plight of flood victims.
Instead of receiving the usual trophies for showing up their fellow club members, winners of the monthly competition of the Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in Gen. Trias, Cavite, went home with certificates printed on plain paper still feeling good.
The club opted to donate the budget allotted for the trophies, totaling P29,000, to the Inquirer?s fund campaign drive for those suffering from the effects of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng in Luzon.
Another P12,000 was collected from the participants that brought the total to P41,000 which will be turned over to the country?s No. 1 paper.
Wilbert Uy led tournament winners with the day?s lowest net of seven-under-par 65 at the Dye course that won him the Class D division.
Uy beat Jose Ong by four strokes in his handicap category to join nine other division winners in the 18-hole tournament that still attracted 184 players despite the bad weather.
Irineo Arbues, Jun-hyun Kim, Elmer Chua, Edgar Bautista, Daniel Tecson, Editha Villanueva, Rosemarie Torres, Benito de Leon and Lee Jin-joo were the other winners.
Arbues beat Tong-hwa Lee by one in Class A with a 67, Kim beat Baltazar Melga by two with a 68 in Class B, Chua?s 67 was good for a three-shot win over Elro delos Reyes in Class C, Bautista scored a 68 to edge Rok-yoo Ji by one for the Seniors I plum, Tecson (73) won over Johansen Otto in Seniors 2 and Benito de Leon II was the dependents winner.
In the ladies category, Villanueva (67) finished far ahead of Nelly Javellana (73) in Group A, Rosemarie Torres (69) and Rosemarie Johansen (70) were the top placers in Group B and Joo-lee Jin took the dependents crown.
The donation was the latest in a string of charitable acts from the sporting world.
Recently, through the efforts of the Philippine Sportswriters Association, several sports officials also chipped in their share for the storm victims.
