MANILA, Philippines--Fourteen-year-old Jacob Lagman created a big stir in the age group divisions when he outclassed third seed Ernesto Pantua, 6-1, 6-3, Saturday to rule the boys? 18-under singles title of the Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open tennis junior championships.
The prized find from Cebu City, who stormed his way past older and more seasoned rivals, earlier barged into the finals with a masterful 6-3, 6-4 triumph over second seed Alberto Villamor in the semifinals.
Also falling victim to Lagman?s onslaught were Arn Frocianos (6-2, 6-3) in the quarterfinals, and Juan Carlo Cano (6-0, 6-0) in the second round.
Also grabbing the spotlight was 13-year-old Jurence Zosimo Mendoza, who capped his domination of the 16-under division by downing Andre Banate, 6-3, 6-0, in the finals.
The third-seeded Mendoza, who is taking a crack at the men?s open of the PCA which starts in two weeks, got going by ousting John Rudas, 6-0, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals.
Mendoza eliminated John Maverick Victoria, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarters before routing Mao delos Reyes, 6-1, 6-2, in the Final Four.
