PUREFOODS survived Sta. Lucia's late surge for a 68-63 decision Saturday night in a KFC PBA Philippine Cup road game at the Robert Barbers Memorial Sports Complex in Surigao City.

The TJ Giants built enough cushion to hold off the rallying Realtors, who threatened at 66-62 after trailing by as many as 19 points midway in the final period.

Kerby Raymundo shot 15 points, including 12 in the first half, while Roger Yap added 10, counting a free throw he made inside the final 10 seconds that pegged the final score in the game presented by Phoenix Fuel.

With the victory, the Giants tied their victims at fourth with a 5-4 record at the end of the first round.

Purefoods extended its 48-43 lead in the third quarter to 65-46 with five minutes remaining after a 17-3 burst capped by layups from Rafi Reavis and Marc Pingris.

The Giants went scoreless for a three-minute stretch and Joshua Urbiztondo fired all of his eight points to help Kelly Williams, whose free throws with 20 seconds remaining sliced the lead, 62-66.

But Pingris and Yap split their free throws to preserve the victory for the Giants.

Meanwhile, pacesetter Alaska guns for its wninth win in 10 games when it tackles Barako Bull at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
