MANILA, Philippines—National University’s bid for a quarterfinal berth will be tested Wednesday when it takes on unbeaten San Beda College in the 2nd Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Invitational Cup at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Bulldogs and the Red Lions collide at 2 p.m., to be followed by the encounter between quarterfinalists Adamson University and De La Salle University at 4 p.m.

National U’s (2-3) quarterfinal chances were boosted by the withdrawal of Letran College as most of the Knights are members of Philippine Basketball League finalist Hapee Toothpaste.

Without the Knights, who defaulted their last two matches, the Bulldogs’ rivals for the remaining Group A quarterfinal seat are the Jose Rizal University Bombers (3-4) and the San Sebastian College Stags (2-4).

Meanwhile, more than 200 collegiate teams nationwide will take part in the National Collegiate Championship, a five-month event that ends with the staging of the Filoil-Flying V “Sweet Sixteen” Final Challenge in November.

Eight teams have been seeded outright to the finals, led by the top two UAAP and NCAA teams.

The national champion will receive a scholarship grant worth P500,000 and represent the country to next year’s Universiade Games in Serbia.

The runner-up will get P200,000 scholarship grant while the third and fourth placers will receive P100,000 and P50,000, respectively. Romina S. Austria
