Welcoat survived a mighty rally by the Purefoods down the stretch to score a repeat 102-97 win over the Giants in the PBA Fiesta Cup road game at the Mindanao Civic Center in Tubod, Lanao del Norte.
It was Welcoat's second straight win over Purefoods this conference as it also scored a 110-103 triumph in their initial encounter last April 20.
Rob Wainwright netted a personal conference-high of 26 points anchored on six-for-nine shooting from the three-point land for Welcoat.
The win snapped a five-game slide and improved the Dragons' record to 4-10 (win-loss). The Giants slid to 6-7.
The Dragons led by as many as 24 points, 73-49, in the third but the Giants made a torrid run in the endgame and even had the chance to force an extra-five minute session.
Welcoat was still up by 11 points, 96-85, but Purefoods staged a late rally capped by a Chico Lañete layup that made it 97-99 with 8.7 secinds left.
After a split free throw by Froilan Baguion, Purefoods had the chance to send the game into overtime but Lañete badly missed a three-point attempt with eight-tenths of a second left.
Action resumes today at the Araneta Coliseum with leaguer-leaders Red Bull Barakos and Coca-Cola Tigers facing separate foes.
The Tigers (8-5) take on the Talk N Text Phone Pals (7-6) in the first game, while the Barakos (8-5) clash with the Magnolia Beverage Masters (7-6) in the main game.
Cebuano cager Reed Friar Juntilla is expected to make his debut with the Barakos, who recently signed the former University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancer to a two-year contract worth P2.8 million. Correspondent Calvin D. Cordova
