MANILA, Philippines—The Hapee-Ateneo partnership in the Philippine Basketball League is pushing through, after all.
After a week of flip-flopping by Ateneo de Manila University, Hapee finally got its wish when the school finally gave the go-signal for its key players to see action for the Complete Protectors in the coming PBL season beginning Oct. 25.
Hapee team manager Bernard Yang confirmed the development on Sunday but said Ateneo will only allow its players to play if they maintain good academic standing.
"Not all players who agreed earlier to play for the team will be allowed by Ateneo to play since some of them will have to concentrate first on their studies to maintain their grades," Yang said.
Yang hinted that UAAP MVP Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Finals MVP Nonoy Baclao, Eric Salamat and Jai Reyes will most likely be part of the Hapee line-up. The Complete Protectors are also hoping to tab Chris Tiu despite the ace guard's numerous commitments.
"The team will be different if it has Chris Tiu," said Yang. "He's a warrior and a winner."
The Blue Eagles failed to appear in the draft ceremonies Tuesday and Hapee later learned that Ateneo has pulled out some of its players from the draft, citing tight academic schedule.
But Ateneo again backtracked on its decision in a move welcomed by Hapee owner Dr. Cecilio Pedro.
Hapee is also bent on keeping the services of Jervy Cruz, despite Magnolia's reported interest in the former University of Santo Tomas center and 2007 UAAP MVP.
Magnolia has adopted UST in the coming conference.
Hapee coach Gee Abanilla wants Cruz to team up with Al-Hussaini.
"It's going to be a deadly force," Abanilla said.
