Police Officer 2 Jose Clint Tuling Cañete, 39, of Cordova town and a member of the Regional Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operation Task Group, was on a motorcycle from Lapu-Lapu City to Cebu City when witnesses saw two men on another motorcycle, both wearing closed helmets, overtake the officer at the top of the bridge, Senior Police Officer 1 Rico Cabatingan, an investigator with the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO), said.

The man riding on the back of the motorcycle shot Cañete, who had attended a hearing of a case against a certain Eddie Palincod, several times in the back.

Cabatingan said Randel Agbo, a passenger on a Lapu-Lapu-bound jeepney, got down and and brought Cañete to the Cortes General Hospital in Mandaue City, where the policeman was declared dead on arrival.

The police recovered three .45-caliber empty shells and slugs.

Senior Superintendent Vicente Mersan Premne, Mandaue police chief, and Senior Superintendent Mariano Natuel, Lapu-lapu City police director, met Tuesday afternoon to agree on a coordinated investigation.

While the ambush happened at the Mandaue side of the bridge, Cañete and the two gunmen were seen coming from Lapu-Lapu City.
