Cyclist crashes, airlifted to hospital

BERGAMO – Spaniard Pedro Horrillo of Rabobank was airlifted to hospital by helicopter after crashing badly during the eighth stage of the Tour of Italy from Morbegno to Bergamo on Saturday.

Horrillo crashed on the descent of the Culmine di San Pietro mountain about 70 kilometers into the 209-km race, according to the Tour director Angelo Zomegnan.

He was taken to hospital in Bergamo where medical sources said he had suffered serious trauma to his head and several fractures.
