MANILA, Philippines – Officials of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) should have a fixed term to give them time to implement long-term programs to improve the performance of Filipino athletes, according to a pending bill at the House of Representatives.
Under the bill being pushed by Speaker Prospero Nograles, the PSC chair and its four commissioners will have fixed, four-year terms. Under the PSC's present charter, the officials do not have a definite tenure.
The chance to introduce long-term reforms, including searching for and training top athletes, could improve the country's chance of placing in the Olympic games, Nograles said in a statement.
“The lack of continuity on the programs of the PSC may have contributed to the inability of our athletes to win any gold in the Olympic games,” he said.
