Phelps leads US to 4x100 relay world record

ROME - The United States won the men's 4x100m medley relay world title in a world record time of 3min 27.28sec here on Sunday, Michael Phelps collecting his fifth gold medal of the World Championships.

The American quartet of Aaron Peirsol, Eric Shanteau, Phelps and David Walters broke the previous record of 3:30.68 set by the United States in winning Olympic gold in Beijing.

Germany took the silver in 3:28.58, just edging Australia who took bronze in 3:28.64.
