Toyo Gakuen nips UP netters

TOYO GAKUEN UNIVERSITY leaned heavily on its girls team to score a 7-5 victory over University of the Philippines Monday in the second day of the Philippines-Japan University Friendship Tennis ?09 at the Alabang Country Club.

Kana Morimoto and Ayaka Iwata bested Karen Guillermo and Bea Fabregas, 8-4, before Yumiko Watanabe and Kurumi Suzuki stunned Natasha Gaston and Zhane Quitara, 8-4, in the girls doubles to start off the day.

Suzuki next scored a 6-0 rout over Kim Guillermo in the girls singles, while Watanabe drubbed JV Custodio, 6-0, and Morimoto stumped Natasha Gaston, 6-1.

Fortunately for the UP bets, the second RP school teams that sized up Toyo Gakuen, top girl Zhane Quitara turned back Ayaka Iwata, 6-4, in the last of the four girls singles matches.

Last Sunday, Ateneo bested Toyo Gakuen (7-5) in the opener.

UP?s boys doubles team swept its matches as Dennis Vitaliano and Leandro Fernandez beat Ryohei Okada and Kazuhiro Hashima, 8-5, and James Pang and Julian Mendoza wore down Shohei Maruta and Kazuto Kawata, 8-7 (6).
