Slammers down Patriots in Game 1 of ABL Finals

Cebu Daily News

THE CHANG THAILAND Slammers are just a win away from completing their fairy-tale run in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) Season 2.

This as former University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) stalwart Ardy Larong helped spark his team to a game-deciding run in the fourth period en route to a 66-58 win by the Slammers over the reigning champions Philippine Patriots that gave them a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three finals series yesterday in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Slammers also put the clamps on Patriots import Gabe Freeman, especially in the final frame, where he was held scoreless.

Freeman was aggressive in the first quarter, where he scattered nine points but three quick fouls late in the second quarter turned him into a mere spectator in the opening game of the series. He picked up his fourth foul early in the third and eventually went into the shower room with still more than two minutes.

While it was Chris Kuete who topscored for the Slammers with 18 points, it was Larong who delivered the knockout punch. With the score tied at 49-49 early in the fourth, Larong buried his second triple which sparked a decisive 11-0 run that gave them their biggest lead.
