FILIPINO Francisco “Django” Bustamante’s precise position play and creativity frustrated American bet Corey “The Prince” Deuel, 15-8, in their winner-take-all, $5,000 2nd International Pool Tour (IPT) 8-ball Challenge last Thursday at the ritzy North Side of Chicago, Illinois.
Dubbed as the ‘East vs. West Showdown’ the top player of Puyat Sports, capped his victory with the shot of the night, kissing the 8-ball to the 4-ball for the easy, 15-8 win and the $5,000 booty.
Deuel, the former US Open 9-ball champion, took the first rack after winning the lag, but missed a tough carom shot giving Bustamante the chance to control the game by winning eight straight racks including five breaks and run-outs.
Bustamante continued to break up clusters and cleanly navigate racks, clearing the table again after forcing Deuel to foul, then broke and ran two straight to reach the hill, 14-7.
The title is the second international crown for Bustamante after topping the 2008 Derby City Classic in West Executive Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky.
His $5,000 win in IPT 8-ball allowed Bustamante to increase his total money earnings to $37,750 to remain No.1 this month.
He finished first in the Derby City Classic Master of the Table ($20,000), 7th in the Derby City Classic Banks Division ($1,100), 3rd in the Derby City Classic One Pocket Division ($2,850) and 2nd in the Derby City Classic 9-ball division ($8,800).
