Unknown to mainstream media, former top prospect Rodel Mayol had suffered a fourth-round knockout loss at the hands of young Mexican prospect Adrian Hernandez on February 9 at the Domo De la Feria in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico.
Once considered a possible heir to superstar Manny Pacquiao, Mayol has now lost twice in a row, and is now a far cry from the once formidable fighter who terrorized the mini-flyweight division in Asia only a few years ago.
Mayol is now 3-1 in his last four fights, hardly the record of someone who will be considered a possible world champion. Some loyal Mayol fans, however, are still counting on him to bounce back and eventually win a title.
Mayol, who was once a feared OPBF champion, first suffered his professional loss at the hands of former WBC champion Eagle Den Julaphan.
Last year, he challenged IBF light flyweight champ Ulises Solis in Chicago and lost on an eighth-round technical knockout.
For the Hernandez fight, Mayol was reportedly a last-minute substitute in a scheduled six-rounder.
?He lost by KO in the fourth round. I think he got karma for what he had been doing to his former handlers,? said promoter Rex ?Wakee? Salud, referring to Mayol's former managers Antonio L. Aldeguer and Yasuo Matsuoka of Japan.
