MANILA, Philippines—Coca-Cola tries to work up another streak and put Sta. Lucia Realty into one it will not like as the Smart PBA Fiesta Cup holds its regular twin-bill on Tuesday before the league goes out of town for the annual All-Star break later this week.
The Tigers gun for a second straight win to regain the solo lead and deal the reigning Philippine Cup champion Realtors a second consecutive defeat in the 7:20 p.m. game at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
Coca-Cola bounced back from its only loss with a masterful conquest of crowd-darling Barangay Ginebra last week even as the Realtors try to regroup after their three-game winning streak ended also last week.
Sta. Lucia will go into the game a 113-115 loser to Talk 'N Text, which seeks a third straight win at 4:50 p.m. against dangerous Air21.
Regular elimination-round action resumes Wednesday next week as the league travels to Bacolod City for the yearly All-Star classic.
The Tigers are tied for the lead with idle Red Bull at 4-1, while the Realtors are in solo third at 3-1.
Wesley Wilson and Kelly Williams will continue to lead the Realtors, who got a dose of their own physical defense against Talk 'N Text in a high-scoring contest.
"We got our way offensively against the best defensive team in the league," Talk 'N Text coach Chot Reyes said after the win on Friday.
Defense will also be the focus of Coca-Cola coach Binky Favis after the Realtors, who came into Friday's game yielding only close to 90 points, allowing 25 more against the Phone Pals.
Favis has the tools to do it, with his imports Jason Dixon and George Gervin Jr. capable of putting up big numbers like locals Asi Taulava, Alex Cabagnot and even rookie Ronjay Buenafe.
The Express, with a level 2-2 slate, will again lean on Steve Thomas, Ranidel De Ocampo, Wynne Arbleda and the ever-solid Arwind Santos, the runner-up to Williams in the rookie race last year who has turned into Air21's heart and soul.
Meanwhile, Randy Holcomb, the do-it-all Alaska import, has been summoned to the Office of the Commissioner on Tuesday to explain a Flagrant 1 foul on Rich Alvarez in the Aces' losing game against Red Bull last Saturday.
Holcomb bloodied Alvarez with a forearm to the nose in the dying seconds of regulation play. The Barako won the game in overtime as Celino Cruz hit 13 of his 19 points, including three triples, in the extra period.
