GGC, USC bag titles in Frasco Cup

Team GGC displayed the heart of a champion as they came back from two sets down to beat Consolacion, 20-25, 16-25, 25-20, 25-12, 15-11, and capture the championship in the women?s division of the 1st Duke Frasco Volleyball Open late Sunday at the Panphil Frasco Sports Complex in Liloan, Cebu.

Taking cue from their star-studded lineup which features four national champions from the Nestea Beach Volley circuit, the belles of GGC overhauled their lackadaisical performance in the first two sets to secure the title and the cash prize of P20,000.

Two-time Cesafi champion University of San Carlos (USC), meanwhile, frustrated Designer Specs, 29-27, 25-22, 25-15, to take the men?s title and the P20,000 cash prize.

Playing like lost sheep in the opening stages of the match, GGC paid a costly price as Arlene Maluluy-on, Maritess Natad and Susana Yuson pounded its porous defense with spikes and crafty attacks to open up a 2-0 set lead.

Facing imminent defeat had they not got their acts together, the GGC belles followed the lead of current Southwestern University (SWU) head coach Janeth Ponte as they started their huge comeback. With Florian Gutierrez, Jusabelle Brillo Janez Igot and Marissa Lagancia all finding their groove, GGC swept the next three sets to complete the come-from-behind win.

Placing third in the men?s class was Talisay, which beat Paul Yu, 25-20, 25-21, 17-25, 23-25, 17-15. The University of Southern Philippines Foundation beat Paul Yu in the women?s division?s third-place match, 12-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-18. The runner-up squads went home with P15,000 while third-place teams got P10,000. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
