The streaking Alaska Aces lost an early sizable lead, built another wide margin late in the game and went on to score a 110-98 triumph over the Talk ?N Text Phone Pals on Sunday in the PBA Fiesta Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome.
It was the Aces' third straight win for a 5-6 (win-loss) record.
Those three wins came at the expense of the league-leaders as Alaska's previous victims were the Coca-Tigers and the Red Bull Barakos.
The loss denied the Pals of taking the solo top spot and instead dropped to second place with a 7-5 record.
Red Bull and Coke share the top with similar 7-4 slates.
Alaska, which played without the injured Jeff Cariaso, posted a 41-22 lead in the second quarter but Renren Ritualo exploded for the Pals, firing 16 points in that quarter alone that enabled Talk ?N Text to cut its deficit to just a point at the half, 45-44.
Despite losing a big lead, the Aces still played with grit in the third as new recruits LA Tenorio and Larry Fonacier fueled a mighty run for the Aces, who took another double digit lead, 80-69, going into the fourth.
The best that the Pals could do was to move within eight points in the fourth as the Aces put up the necessary stops to seal the win.
Randy Holcomb spearheaded the Aces with 29 points, while Willie Miller and Tenorio added 19 each.
Sonny Thoss added a personal conference-high 18 points, while Fonacier pitched in 14.
The output of Tenorio and Fonacier were their highest since joining the Aces.
Aaron Mc Ghee led the Pals with 24 markers.
