Chester Cokaliong of Class '78 cemented his status as one of the top shooters in the land as he completed a remarkable feat in the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association's 10th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup Shootout last Sunday at the City Sports Club-Cebu gym.
For the second straight year, Cokaliong topped the three-point shootout and also completed a stirring grand slam in the two-ball contest, where he was crowned champion for the third straight year.
“I really worked hard for this. I spent a lot of time in the gym to practice shooting and it is very satisfying when your hard work pays off especially that you won against the younger players,” said the 47-year-old Cokaliong, who won his 18th three-point crown and 12th two-ball contest title in the his career.
In the three-point shootout, Cokaliong finished the elimination round with 13 points before scoring 18 in the finals, beating Ritzi Lloyd Tan of Class 2006, Alvin Albano of Class '92 and Kent Benedict Uy of Class 2005, who finished with eight, seven and six markers, respectively.
It was Cokaliong's third three-point crown in CECABA with the first coming in the 2004 season.
In the two-ball competition, Cokaliong and partner Wilty Yap barely qualified to the final round after scoring just 24 points in the elimination.
However, Cokaliong and Yap, who secured their second title as partners, exploded for 47 points in the finals.
Jobert Cuyos and Jan Michael Yu of Class 2002 wound up second with 34 points, Rex Millan and Paul Timothy So of Class '98-A landed at third place with 25, while Esteban Ku and Stephen Tan of Class '83 came in fourth with 22.
Aside from dominating the individual contests, Cokaliong also shone bright in the team event as he joined hands with teammates Nelson Palomas, Edvin Kaw, Johnny Ku and Wilty Yap in bagging the three-point team category crown with 10 points.
Ralph Victor Yap, Junwyn Dy, Nolsie John Cisneros, Ritzi Lloyd Tan, and Carlo Tan of Class 2006 settled for second with seven points, while Gerald Chua, Rex Alinson, Dreyfuss Ang, Rogelio Donayre, and Shaun Christopher Tan of Class ‘96 ranked third with four.
Alexander Pena of Class 2001 secured the free-throw shooting title at the expense of defending champion Rex Millan of Class ‘98-A.
