The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras staged a remarkable fightback, clawing back from a 19-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat South Korea's Hanyang University, 105-93, in their battle-for-third place of the 6th Asian University Basketball Championshis (AUBC) last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Koreans, with their huge size and heft advantage, dominated the contest in the early goings and posted what looked like a safe 82-63 lead early in the fourth.
The Cobras, however, refused to roll over as they employed a pesky press defense that snapped the life out of the stunned Koreans.
With their defense working well, the Cobras unleashed a scorching 29-4 run to take the lead for good, 92-86.
The Koreans did not know what hit them and wobbled until the final buzzer.
Eric Zanoria spearheaded the impressive victory as he piled up a game-high 38 points. He was heavily backed by Alfred Belande, who tallied 21 points.
Belande and Zanoria starred in the big SWU comeback with the former scoring 10 points in the fourth and the latter chipping in nine.
The win erased the stigma of the Cobras' heartbreaking 69-89 loss to the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers last Friday—a defeat that denied them from barging to the championship round.
The championship game between the Green Lancers and Huaquaio University of China was still being played as of this writing.
