National University (NU) snapped a six-game losing streak while stopping Far Eastern University's (FEU) own winning run as the Bulldogs stunned the Tamaraws, 69-61, on Sunday in the 71st UAAP men's basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.
It was NU's first win in seven games, escaping a winless campaign in the first round of elimination.
Jonathan Jahnke came up big in the endgame for the Bulldogs as he sank six straight points in the final minute to give NU a 67-61 lead after FEU tied the contest at 61-all.
The 5-foot-10 Jahnke scored 12 of his 15 points from the three-point territory and made a booming triple in the final 34.4 seconds that pushed the Bulldogs to a 65-61 advantage.
Jewel Ponferrada also played big for NU as he finished with a game-high 16 points that went along with his six rebounds, two assists and four blocked shots.
Ponferrada scored seven of his total output in the third quarter where the Bulldogs tallied their biggest lead at 50-40.
Jonathan Fernandez finished with 12 points for the Tamaraws, who saw their four-game winning run come to an end for their second loss in seven games.
FEU continued to miss the services of Marnel Baracael, who is still confined in a hospital after being shot by an unidentified gunman on July 24.
The Tamaraws' lineup was further deciminated after big man Robert Kave, who was with Baracael during the shooting, decided to return to Papua New Guinea due to trauma.
