6 p.m. - UC vs. UV (srs.)
The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars remained undefeated this season, manhandling the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, 73-66, for their fifth straight win in the seniors division of the Cesafi basketball tournament Sunday evening at the Cebu Coliseum.
The story of the day, though, is the literal gargantuan match-up of college basketball's brightest stars when the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers' 6-foot-11 giant Gregory Slaughter takes on the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters' 6-foot 7 behemoth Junmar Fajardo in today?s main game at 6 p.m.
The two giants have cast a dominating shadow over the rest of the competition with their imposing play down in the shaded lane on both ends of the floor.
Unfortunately, because of injuries to Fajardo, the big men have not faced each other in formal competition until Tuesday.
Both get their first crack at one another with UC looking to halt UV's three-game run.
The webmasters are fresh of an 83-68 thrashing of the Don Bosco Greywolves last Sunday.
In that game, Fajardo managed a double-double performance with 13 points and 15 rebounds in spite playing with foul trouble all game long.
He sparked a game-breaking 15-2 run bridging the third and fourth periods while new recruits Kevin Quilantang and Edward Pao steered the ship for the Webmasters, who captured their second win in three outings.
Meanwhile, the league-leading Jaguars roared to their fifth straight win as they capitalized on the Cobras' inefficiency on offense and inexperience, down the stretch to remain undefeated with a clean 5-0 (win-loss) mark. After seeing their 10-point lead dwindle to just four points, 68-64, with two minutes left in the game, the Jaguars retaliated with two consecutive fastbreak layups courtesy of Luther Justiniani and Jerome Villaver to finally deaden the Cobras' rally.
Jan Malinao led the way for USJ-R with 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists while Justiniani and Armand Ponce combined for 27 points.
