Round one of the highly-anticipated matchup between University of Cebu's (UC) 6-foot-8 beanpole Junmar Fajardo and the University of the Visayas' (UV) 6-foot-11 center Greg Slaughter was won by the Green Lancers’ gentle giant.
Slaughter’s Green Lancers barely escaped Fajardo’s Webmasters, 82-80, in the seniors’ division game of the Cesafi basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum on Wednesday.
The seven-time champions Lancers simply had too much veteran savvy to come away with the exciting win to up their record to 4-1 (win-loss) while dropping their opponents to 2-2.
The win did not come on a silver platter as the Lancers had to stave off a furious comeback by the Webmasters from a 17-point deficit.
Led by the outside sniping of Robinson Mohamad and a huge five-point cluster from Jannsen Abella, the Webmasters came to within three, 74-77, with 45 seconds left in the game.
UC had a chance to cut the lead further on the ensuing possession as Laurence Agas stole the ball, but UV's Von Lanete countered with a steal of his own and fed Slaughter for two free-throws to up their lead to five, 79-74, with 22 ticks left.
Lanete and Chris Diputado added three more free-throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Slaughter scored 27 points and grabbed nine boards in the win, besting Fajardo's totals of 12 points and 21 rebounds.
Lanete tallied 14 points, five rebounds, seven assists and seven steals in a solid all-around performance.
The Webmasters, appeared amped and ready as they came out firing on all cylinders with Fajardo scoring eight points, mostly on putbacks to push UC ahead, 22-17, in the first period.
Meanwhile, the Baby Lancers made it a twinkill for UV as they routed Don Bosco, 86-52, in the juniors division.
