THE camp of WBO superbantam champ Juan Manuel Lopez has indicated that the Puerto Rican champion might see action in the December 6 card featuring Oscar De la Hoya against Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
According to Orlando Peniero, who trains Lopez in an interview with Primera Hora, the recent loss of Miguel Cotto at the hands of Antonio Margarito has opened doors for Lopez.
The trainer indicated that two names have cropped up as possible opponents for Lopez on December 6--Filipinos Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista and Bernabe Concepcion.
“We expect to finish the year on a large event like that,” Pineiro told Primera Hora as quoted by Boxingscene. “To be on a card like that would be excellent for Juanma in economic terms and exposure. The unexpected loss by Miguel Cotto changed the landscape of boxing completely. It creates a little more force so that the Juanma-Mania can continue growing.”
The trainer added that whether it's Bautista or Concepcion, his fighter would accept the fight.
“I like the two [Concepcion and Bautista]. They are two good names, but if there is a possibility a rematch with Daniel Ponce De Leon, we might consider it. This is a business and we are going to do what's best for the career of Juanma. We are willing to fight against anyone. We will see if there is someone brave enough to accept,” Peneiro said.
Earlier, Bautista's camp has indicated that the young fighter is still two or three more fights away from competing for another world title try, and that the Bohol-raised fighter won't be in a world title fight on December 6 but will be up against a tough, rated fighter.
However, Aljoe Jaro, who manages Concepcion, said in an interview yesterday that if indeed his ward gets chosen to fight Lopez, he will be inclined to accept the fight.
“My boy has improved, and he's also got power in his fists. I think we will accept that fight,” said Jaro.
