Cebuano cager JR Quiñahan will be playing with a new team when the PBA Philippine Cup opens on Oct. 4.
The Alaska Aces sent Quiñahan to the Air21 Express in exchange for rookie Mark Borboran, the sixth pick in the recent Rookie Draft.
“We have become faster with the addition of Mark. He can play both the two and three. He can run. He can shoot. He makes us a better, faster team,” Alaska General Manager Joaqui Trillo told the team's website, alaskaaces.com.ph.
Borboran, a former University of the East (UE) stalwart, is the fifth left-handed player who will play for the Aces, joining other lefties Willie Miller, Joe Devance, Reynel Hugnatan and John Ferriols .
Quinahan, a product of the University of the Visayas (UV), was the seventh pick overall by the Aces in the 2007 PBA Draft.
Alaska decided to release Quiñahan since the Aces are now loaded with big men.
Alaska's frontline will be manned by Sonny Thoss, Reynel Hugnatan, Joe Devance, Ferriols and new recruit Ervin Sotto.
“Both teams benefit from the trade. We get an athletic wing who can shoot. The Express get a big man who can spell Homer Se. So, definitely we both gain from trading these two players,” said Trillo.
Meanwhile, the Aces moved closer to earning a championship seat in the pre-season tournament after they dumped the depleted Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants, 88-70, at the Arellano University Gymnasium.
Miller paced the Aces with 21 points, Devance added 15, Thoss donated 12 while Jeff Cariaso contributed 11.
The Giants missed the services of 2006 PBA Most Valuable Player James Yap due to a sprained ankle.
