Roach says Pacman will beat Oscar in 9

CALIFORNIA--In an exclusive video interview with FoxSports.com's Mark Kriegel, two-time BWAA “Trainer of the Year” Freddie Roach, boldly predicted that his star pupil, WBC lightweight king and boxing's No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter Manny Pacquiao, would knock out Oscar De La Hoya when they meet on Dec. 6, in a 12-round welterweight super fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

“I'm so confident in Pacquiao in this fight...we're going to knock him out in nine rounds,” said Roach. “He [Oscar] gets quite tired at normal paces. Pacquiao doesn't fight at normal paces. We're going to push the old man…I love this fight!”

Pacquiao is currently training at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood while De la Hoya is girding up for the fight in Big Bear, California.

Roach was also asked on whether Oscar will ever have the support of the die-hard Mexican fans, to which he answered:

“No…They [Mexican fight fans] like fighters, not boxers. When the bell rings, the Mexican fans in the audience are going to be on Pacquiao's side...The true Mexican fans love his [Pacquiao's] style.”

The bespectacled ring tactician also slightly gave away a hint on what will be Team Pacquiao's fight strategy.

“Oscar can't really stand the pace of a Manny Pacquiao, fighting three minutes of every round, attacking him, putting the pressure on this guy, taking away his height and reach advantage by getting close and fighting on the inside and work that body where Oscar has been weak his whole career. And at this stage of Oscar's career, he's busted up. He's starting to break up. His face in the Forbes fight, he was all banged up after that fight. He had a broken cheekbone…and this guy [Forbes] can't even punch.”

Apparently, the gap between Roach and De la Hoya, whom he trained last year for the Mayweather gap, has started widening up owing to what Roach said was De la Hoya's inability to tell him personally that he won't be his trainer for the next fight.

“I found out through the media that I was no longer the trainer and that he brought Floyd Sr. back and it was a little disappointing because Oscar had told me, one time, he said, ‘I'll never fight without you in my corner again.’ It bothered me that he couldn't tell me face to face.”

Meanwhile, Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain and Roach will host an international media conference call on Monday, November 10 to discuss their fighters training regimen in preparation for their December 6 “The Dream Match”-De la Hoya vs. Pacquiao.

Also set to join the discussion are Richard Shaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions and Bob Arum, Top Rank Chairman.

Monday's conference call is the first of several weekly conference calls leading up to the 'Dream Match' on Dec. 6.

Also on Wednesday, Golden Boy Promotions has set up a special media day where Oscar De la Hoya will answer questions from the media straight from his camp in Big Bear, California, an area well known for snow skiing during winter in Southern California.

“The Golden Boy Promotions is providing the media a free bus to and from Big Bear and lunch to boot!” reports Philboxing.com's Ed de la Vega.
