MANILA, Philippines?Ana Patricia Barredo finished off Pauline Marie Tan in straight sets, 21-19, 21-17, to capture the 16-under girls? singles title at the close of the 6th Toby?s-Dunlop Youth Badminton Championships Monday at the Atrium A of SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.
The victory was an early Christmas gift, said the 16-year-old Laguna standout, who also topped the same division in the Bicol-Southern Tagalog leg of the Philippine Olympic Festival held last September in Los Baños.
?Sa wakas, nakuha ko din ang titulo (At last, I got the title),? said Barredo after her convincing win on court 12.
Next to aquatics which produced 38 gold medals for POF BST winner Laguna, badminton came in second with 19 gold medals with Barredo and three teammates placing 1-2-3-4 in the girls? 16-under category. Laguna?s final gold-silver-bronze tally was 126-109-99.
Tan showed no effects of her singles loss and teamed up with Isabel Fernandez to defeat Kimberly Gatpolintan and Abigail Garcia, 14-21, 21-17, 21-12, in the 16-under girls? doubles championship.
Jason Ubungen and Pauline Angelica Ramos, meanwhile, won by walkover against Dunlop/Whackers stablemates Allen del Mundo and Elaine Vinluan in the 16-under mixed doubles competition.
Also bagging gold medals were Karyn Velez who outlasted Reyne Galimlin, 21-17, 21-19, for the 18-under girls? singles title, and the pair of Paulo Lorenzo Sunga and Bianca Legaspi, 21-18, 21-19 winners over Aries delos Santos and Kara Louders in the mixed doubles plum.
