THE 2nd Mizuno-AsiaMiles Sinulog Half Marathon was officially launched yesterday at the Mooon Café in Guadalupe, Cebu City.

The event, organized by the Cebu Executive Runners Club (CERC) and A.S.A.P Cebu Advertising Services and Promotion, aims to promote the event as Cebu?s signature marathon race.

The 21-km race sanctioned by Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA), will use the same route as last year but will have more logistics this time.

?Last year we encountered water shortage. That is why we are making sure that we will have more water stations with marshals on street corners,? CERC President Jesse Taborada said.

The race, which will unfold on Jan. 17, is expecting a thousand runners who will answer the starting gun at the Asiatown I.T. Park. Organizers are also eyeing balikbayans and foreigners to compete.

Cebu's marathon queen Leszl Gitaruelas and Davao's top runner Elmer Bartolo are expected to face stiff battle in their title-retention bids after some national team members confirmed their participation such as former Milo Marathon national record holder Cresenciano Sabal and Zamboanga's Mary Grace Delos Santos

Also competing are long distance runners from Negros, Rene Desuyo, Eric Panique and Jerson Agravante, Bukidnon's Crifrankreal Indapan and local bets Mendel Lopez, Eugene and Joel Delposo and Cebu's fast?rising runner John Philip Dueñas of Southwestern University.

Seeing action in the distaff side are Milo Marathon Cebu leg champion Madelyn Carter, Mary Jane Beboso, Merlita Arias, Michelle Gilbuena, Katie Fischer and Emily Chiongbian.

A special award awaits runners who can break the Philippine record of 1 hour, 10 minutes and 20.65 seconds in the men?s 21k marathon and Gitaruelas? time of 1 hour and 28 minutes in the women.

A 5k run will also be featured with some Cebu sportswriters competing.

Registration fee is pegged at P250 for the 21K and P150 for the 5K event.

Registration is still open at the Philippine Sports Commission inside the Cebu City Sports Center, Mizuno SM Northwing, Holiday Spa-Gym Banilad and Sug-Angan Restaurant in J. Llorente.

Deadline for registration is January 14,2009.
