MANILA, Philippines—The Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Monday vowed to take a strong action against game fixing and to remain “vigilant against any form of cheating” in varsity sports.

Reacting to a Philippine Daily Inquirer special report, school officials led by UAAP president Anton Montinola of host Far Eastern University issued a statement saying that the league had “consistently been against game fixing or any other form of cheating in holding basketball competitions and all the other sporting events.”

The statement, read by De La Salle University representative Bro. Bernie Oca during the league’s media launch, said the country’s most popular varsity league “remains firm and steadfast in ensuring a level playing field.”

The UAAP “will not tolerate nor condone game fixing,” the statement said. “We police our ranks and we shall deal with any such incident with a firm hand.”

This year’s edition of the UAAP kicks off with the men’s basketball competition on July 11 at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
