PAUL SANGA reeled off eight straight points before Mark Barroca took over as Far Eastern turned back University of Santo Tomas, 75-67, yesterday for its seventh straight triumph in the UAAP men?s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

Barroca, a member of the national developmental team, finished with his best performance yet of 23 points on top of six rebounds, four assists and a couple of steals as the Tamaraws joined the Ateneo Blue Eagles on top at 7-1.

?It was hard playing against UST,? said FEU coach Glenn Capacio. ?It?s hard matching up against their big men because they can play outside, shoot threes and drive. And it?s difficult for our big men because they have to extend their defense. I?m happy we survived.?

The Tamaraws bucked the absence of veteran slotman Reil Cervantes, who served a one-game suspension for figuring in a recent altercation during a game against University of the East last week.

Earlier, Martin Reyes knocked in 15 of his 17 points in the second half as University of the Philippines slipped past National University, 78-76.

?We really had a good run in the second and third quarters,? said UP coach Aboy Castro.

The Maroons also took advantage of the absence of NU?s starting center Jewel Ponferrada and guard Jerome Tungcul, who were thrown out for figuring in a scuffle midway in the second quarter.

UST joined University of the East and La Salle at 4-4. Bunched in the bottom of the standings were UP, NU and idle Adamson at 2-6.

In junior action, the Baby Tamaraws made it a double victory for FEU with a 60-43 crushing of the Tiger Cubs at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Isiah Banawa buried 30 markers and 11 rebounds as the UE Junior Warriors (4-4) drubbed the UP Junior Maroons, 82-53.
