MANILA, Philippines—Far Eastern University regained its composure in the fourth set to subdue College of St. Benilde, 25-17, 25-19, 13-25, 25-18, Tuesday and seal a quarterfinal berth in the Shakey’s V-League Season 6 second conference at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

Oozing confidence after taking the first two frames, the Lady Tamaraws inexplicably let their guard down, allowing the Lady Blazers to seize the third set.

Working behind the attacking triumvirate of Rachel Daquis, Cherry Vivas and Shaira Gonzales, the Lady Tamaraws recovered their bearings in the fourth set to nail their fourth straight win.

Daquis provided several crucial hits while Vivas and Gonzales scored on a couple of breaks that neutralized the gutsy stand of the Lady Blazers.

Fille Cainglet scored 23 points while Charo Soriano came up with a league-record five aces on the way to 12 points as Ateneo de Manila University survived Lyceum of the Philippines, 25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 25-21, in the second match.

The Ateneo Lady Eagles notched their second victory against two setbacks while the Lyceum Lady Pirates remained winless in four games.

“I told them to work on our reception,” said FEU coach Nes Pamilar after the Lady Tams secured the second quarterfinal seat. “We allowed too many hits in the third that allowed them (Blazers) to come back.”

University of Santo Tomas, champion of the previous conference, automatically grabbed a quarterfinal berth with its 5-0 record in the single-round eliminations where the top six will advance to the next phase.

Breathing down the Tigresses’ necks are the Lady Tamaraws with five wins and a loss.

Vivas came out firing with 17 hits, including three aces, in a big followup to her 23-point output against San Sebastian last Sunday, while Gonzalez and Rose Cabanag contributed 16 and 11 points each.
