MANILA, Philippines—Miriam College overpowered Angelicum College, 70-62, in Game 2 of their title series at the SSC gym and bagged its second straight junior basketball crown in the 40th Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA).
St. Scholastica’s College spoiled a double Miriam celebration, though, as the Scions recovered from a set down against the Katipuneras to prevail, 22-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-23, and clinch the junior volleyball title.
Katrinne Topacio, a member of the Mythical Team, fired 14 points to lead the Katipuneras’ sweep of the best-of-three Finals series.
Alyanna Nitorreda and Danica Jose chipped in 12 points apiece as the Katipuneras surged ahead by 18 points in the third quarter, 54-36, from a precarious 31-24 halftime lead.
Chiang Kai Shek College’s Madel Castro, who averaged a league-best 25 points per game, bagged the Most Valuable Player plum.
Castro, Topacio and Nitorreda were also named to the Mythical Team along with De La Salle Zobel’s Inna Sarah Corcuera and Angelicum rookie Camille Claro.
Alyana Abad, the junior volleyball MVP, spearhead the Scions’ attack with 11 hits.
The Katipuneras moved within three points of forcing a fifth set, 22-18, before a spate of errors allowed the Scions to wrap up the match at 25-23.
In the midgets finals, San Beda Alabang forged a winner-take-all on Saturday against Miriam with a 23-25, 25-12, 25-14 victory.
