MANILA, Philippines--The race for the last quarterfinal berth heats up Sunday as St. Benilde clashes with winless University of the Philippines in the Shakey?s V-League Season 6 second conference at the FilOil-Flying V Arena.
Toting a 1-4 card, the Lady Blazers are looking to secure at least a playoff for the No. 6 berth against a UP squad teetering on the brink of elimination. The Lady Maroons remain winless in five games like Lyceum.
Gametime is at 2 p.m. with St. Benilde boosted by the return of skipper Giza Yumang and ace hitter Ren Agero.
The duo are coming off a stint in the UniGames in Iloilo City.
Clashing in the second game at 4 p.m. are San Sebastian and Ateneo-Oracare.
The Lady Stags and the Lady Eagles eased through the quarterfinals with straight-sets victories over Lyceum and St. Benilde, respectively, last Friday.
San Sebastian, the reigning NCAA champion, is seeking a fourth win in five games, while Ateneo tries to improve on its 3-2 mark.
The Lady Stags hope to draw consistent performances from the experienced quartet of
Joy Benito, Margarita Pepito, Melissa Mirasol and guest player Jinni Mondejar.
Benito delivered crucial hits against the Lady Pirates and finished with 18 points.
Ateneo will counter with young hitters Fille Cainglet, Angeline Gervacio, Denise Acevedo, Bea Pascual and guest player Charo Soriano. Cainglet had her breakout game of the conference against St. Benilde, finishing with 15 points.
The return of Yumang and Agero gives the Lady Blazers additional options on the attack, which proved to be their waterloo in the 25-22, 25-13, 25-18 loss to the Lady Eagles last Friday.
No player scored in double figures for the Lady Blazers with guest player Rosann Fajardo coming up with a team-best nine points. Zharmaine Velez and Katty Kwan are also hoping to bounce back from sub-par performances.
