MANILA, Philippines--University of Santos Tomas grabbed the first semifinal slot with a 14-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 decision of Adamson Friday night in the Shakey?s V-League Season 6 second conference at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Tigresses drew a superb effort from skipper Aiza Maizo, who pumped in a season-high 27 points, including seven in the fourth set, to lead UST to its eighth victory in nine games.

UST actually bounced back from a four-set loss to San Sebastian, the same team that beat the Tigresses for the second conference title last year.

The Lady Falcons, who opened the quarterfinals with back-to-back wins, still remained in fifth despite dropping to 5-5.

With Angela Benting firing four consecutive hits, Adamson looked on the verge of forcing a deciding set by taking a 17-15 advantage in the fourth set.

But the Tigresses clawed their way back by scoring 10 of the next 12 points, with Maika Ortiz accounting for three blocks. Ortiz and Angeli Tabaquero combined for 25 points.

The Tigresses clash with St. Benilde at 4 p.m. today with the Lady Blazers needing a victory to stay in contention in the tournament sponsored by Sports Vision, Accel, Mikasa, Mighty Bond and OraCare.

Far Eastern U goes up against an inconsistent San Sebastian side in the 6 p.m. main game.
