MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine Sports Commission doesn’t seem worried about the conflict plaguing the national cycling team.
PSC chair William “Butch” Ramirez Tuesday said there was nothing wrong with the purchase of cycling equipment for the Southeast Asian Games, contrary to the charge several riders brought before the Ombudsman.
“As far as the PSC is concerned, the purchase of the equipment was above board,” said Ramirez.
Led by Southeast Asian Games gold medalists Alfie Catalan and Maritess Bitbit, 12 RP riders accused officials and coaching staff of the Philippine Cycling Federation for allegedly shortchanging them with overpriced and inferior equipment.
The PSC issued a statement that it would temporarily cut off financial assistance to the association until the controversy is settled.
Ramirez said the rift between the riders and the officials is an internal affair which the PSC doesn’t want to dip its hands into as much as possible.
“I believe they are now resolving the matter amicably,” said Ramirez.
