Unofficial Medal Tally (as of 4 p.m., Thursday): 1. NCR 26-8-3 2. Calabarzon 3-4-2 3.Ilocos 1-1-1 4. Cagayan Valley 1-0-1 5. Davao 1-2-0 6. Western Visayas 0-15-8

ZAMBOANGA CITY—Incoming sophomore Marvie Borja of University of Santo Tomas snared three golds in record-breaking style as National Capital Region swept the first day of swimming competition in the National Private Schools Athletic Association Meet here.

The Big City bets threatened to pull away in the overall standings after capturing 16 gold medals at the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex pool to increase their haul to 26, way ahead of Calabarzon with three and Ilocos and Cagayan Valley with one each.

The 17-year-old Borja, the reigning UAAP Rookie of the Year, ruled the 400-meter freestyle in 5 minutes, 07.67 seconds, shaving more than 20 seconds off Western Visayas’ Kristine Cabasac’s old record.

Borja also prevailed in the 200m fly, where she clocked a record of 2:39.59, before she anchored the 4x50m squad to another record-setting feat.

NCR actually set five more records through Lianne Marquez (1:11.51) in the women’s 100m breaststroke, Edson Dinglasan (32.29) in the 50m back, Josephine Pilapil (37.49) in the women’s 50m breast, Ferdinand Frigillana (2:20.39) in the 200m fly and the men’s 4x50m medley squad (1:56.04). Frigillana of San Beda College also topped the 400m free in 4:41.16.

Also sparkling for NCR was UST’s Luville Dato-on, who became athletics’ first double gold winner. She won the women’s long jump with a 5.53m effort. She timed 12.1 seconds to rule the women’s 100m Wednesday.
