MANILA, Philippines--Making the most of its familiarity with the course, Wack Wack turned back Friday a hard-fighting Tagaytay Highlands crew in two of the first three matches before settling for a draw in the fourth to win the 2008 Ladies Federation Golf League championship.
Liza Lopez and Felicia Medalla scored a 5-and-4 win over Totelle Dimson and Marilen Yaptangco in the aggregate match at the fabled East course for a 2-1 edge before Jo-Anne Lao and So Han Uy halved the best-ball match with Hannah See and Rosalie Heo for a 4.5-3.5 win.
Both teams battled to a 2-all tie Thursday when the finals opened at the sprawling Midlands layout in Tagaytay City, and a draw in the best-ball match would have necessitated a playoff for the championship.
Wack Wack thus became the first team to win the event twice, having triumphed in 2006, the year after Tagaytay Highlands scored its breakthrough championship romp.
Bing Liboro and Sylvia Montemayor actually started Wack Wack's bid on a smashing note after scoring a 9-and-8 triumph over the Highlands pair of Mely Leyeza and Sandy Prieto-Romualdez.
But Tagaytay quickly leveled in the following match, the high-low, with Hedy See and Maripaz Domingo turning back Claudette Santiago and Celda Santos, 3 and 2, which made the aggregate match the most crucial.
"They were very tough and very worthy opponents," said Wack Wack skipper Stephanie Yu after the noise of the celebration on the 15th green died down. "We were pushed hard. My hat's off to Tagaytay."
"Praises to them for playing such a good match," Prieto-Romualdez said. "We gave it our all but fell short. But it was a fun atmosphere out here today."
Tagaytay survived Valley and Wack Wack bested Alabang in the semifinals to forged the home-and-away battle for the championship.
In the Tagaytay leg on Wednesday, Heo and See beat Lao and Uy on the 18th hole of the best-ball match as Tagaytay rescued a 2-2 draw.
Heo and See's close win and another tight victory in aggregate play pulled off by Maline Flores and Maripaz Domingo prevented the Wack Wack ladies from bringing the showdown to their home course in Mandaluyong with an opening advantage.
Wack Wack scored the first point through Liza Lopez and Felicia Medalla who downed Yaptangco and Karen Buenaventura, 4 and 3, in the greensomes.
Liboro then paired with Ailene Litonjua to secure the second point for Wack Wack by turning back Farah Imperial and Hedy See in the high-low, 2 and 1.
