MANILA, Philippines?Miggy Corcuerra hit successive home runs to spark a 14-hit attack as Cebu trounced Dumaguete, 14-4, in seven innings Sunday and stayed second behind unbeaten Manila in the Baseball Philippines Series 3 at the Rizal Memorial Ballpark.
Corcuerra hit a solo home run in the sixth inning and added a three-run shot in the seventh, where the Dolphins scored nine runs to take a 14-3 lead and set them up for a second straight abbreviated win.
Cebu, a 20-8 seven-inning winner over Antipolo last week, picked up its fourth victory in six starts and took solo second as Taguig upset Batangas with an 8-7 win in the day?s final match.
Ricardo Jimenez hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh to give the Forward Patriots the winning run and a third straight win that tied them at 3-3 with the Batangas Bulls and the Antipolo Pilgrims.
The Pilgrims secured their place in the three-way tie for third after a 9-2 rout of winless Makati.
?Our game plan was to concentrate on our hitting,? said Cebu coach Isaac Bacar-isas in Filipino after sending the Unibikers down to their fourth loss in six games.
Corcuerra?s solo shot in the sixth off Ramil Placides boosted Cebu?s lead to 5-1, but Dumaguete came back with two runs in the lower half of the inning to make it 5-3.
Placides, who replaced Dumaguete starting pitcher Darwin dela Calzada after 4 1/3 innings so the team?s top hurler can work again on Sunday under league rules, didn?t know what hit him in the seventh.
Cebu exploded for nine runs on eight hits off Placides, who also gave up a bases-loaded three-run triple to Nico Uichico after the three-run homer by Corcuerra.
Shortstop Fulgencio Rances started Cebu?s rampage with a double and then Orillana singled. After an infield out, the 22-year-old Corcuerra blasted a Placides fastball to the left for his second round-tripper to make it 8-3.
Singles by Jerome Binarao and Emerson Atilano that sandwiched a walk to Christian Maghanoy then loaded the bases. After Jonard Pareja sent Binarao home with another hit, Uichico smashed a triple to center field before scoring on another single by Rances.
Dumaguete tried to extend the game as Andro Cuyugan blasted a home run then loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. But Joseph Orillana retired the next two batters to preserve the win.
