Calatagan boys ahead in Samsung Amateur

BAGUIO—Ryan Lam carded a second straight even-par 69 Wednesday to hold on to a slim one-stroke lead over Paul Echavez in the second leg of the Samsung Amateur Tour at the Camp John Hay Golf Club course here.

Lam and Echavez, members of the Calatagan stable of Tommy Manotoc which pulled off another titular double in the Fil-Am wars here last year, turned the race for the championship division title into their own showdown as the next player in the rankings, Chester Calpotura, fell nine shots behind.

Lam’s 138 total put him just a stroke ahead of Echavez who followed an opening 70 with a 69.

Hometown bet Calpotura shot a 71 to be at 147 in the event backed chiefly by Samsung Electronics Philippines Inc.

In the 36-hole competitions, Bayani Tecson captured Class C, Charles Baguilat ruled Class D, and three Korean ladies swept the titles in their division.

Tecson broke 80 for two days with a 79 and 78 and raced to a four-shot win over two Koreans.

Baguilat also won by the same margin with rounds of 96 and 101 for 197, beating Wilson Angheng who did 100 and 101 for 201.

Mizuno, Autohub, Callaway, Wow Magic Sing, Titleist, Custom Clubmakers, Gargol, Wave 89.1 and the newly opened The Cliffs at Thunderbird Resort-Poro Point are the other sponsors of the Samsung series. PacSports Philippines and Autohub are staking a Club Car (No. 18) and a Sinski motorcycle (No. 4), respectively, for hole-in-one feats.

The three ladies division winners all trounced their rivals with Lee Ji Yeon topping Class A, Lee So Won prevailing in Class B and Shin Kyoung Ja taking Class C.
