MANILA, Philippines—Three Filipino shuttlers reached the quarterfinals of their respective events following impressive victories against Brunei foes on Thursday in the 14th ASEAN Schools Badminton Championships at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Joper Escueta and the mixed doubles pair of Greg Paz and Gelli Ramos thrashed their rivals but they will be facing tough foes from Thailand Friday.

Escueta, who will turn 15 in August and a two-time Palarong Pambansa champion, crushed Noriskandar Bin Pg Omar, 21-12, 21-14, in the boys’ singles and will next take on Thailand’s Pollawat Boonpan, who had a bye in the first round.

Paz and Ramos, playing as a team for the first time, hardly broke a sweat in disposing of Rahimin Bin Mohd Azri and Sazulinah Bte Hj Mohd Saat, 21-8, 21-7.

Paz, 17, and Ramos, 16, advanced against Siripong Ketwong and Thunphukkanan and Ampunsuwan of Thailand.

The other Filipino mixed doubles pair of Kenneth Monterubio and Jessalam Sampurna, who made it the quarters by the luck of the draw, finally gets going Friday against Thais Bodin Isara and Nuttaya Sanlekanun, 21-15, 7-21, 21-19 winners over Andrew Chooie Kah Ming and Ng Hui Ern of Malaysia.

Peter Gabriel Magnaye, who also enjoyed free passage to the quarters, plays his first match Friday against the winner of the match between Malaysia’s Iskandar Zulkarnain and Indonesia’s Fernaldy Markus which was going on at press time.

The country’s two girls’ singles bets Gelita Castillo and Camille Yang bowed out after putting up tough resistance in the afternoon.

Castillo, an RP team protégé at 13, lost to Nichaon Jindapol of Thailand, 21-16, 21-17, while Yang lost steam in the third set and went down to Singapore’s Thitirat Triyachat, 13-21, 21-13, 21-12.

Earlier, Thailand edged Malaysia, 3-2, to claim the boys’ team championship even as Indonesia asserted its might in the girls’ section, nosing out the Thais, 3-2, to retain the title.
