Adducul optimistic of recovery, comeback

THERE WAS A PALPABLE sadness in the coliseum when he stepped inside the court.

Yet Romel Adducul put up a brave front, managing a smile as he marched in together with other league luminaries during the NCAA opening rites Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.

The once robust 6-foot-6 frame of Adducul -- diagnosed with stage 2 nasal pharynx cancer last March -- had been clearly battered by sessions of chemotherapy and other treatments.

But the veteran Purefoods center opted not to talk about his noticeable weight and hair loss.

“I’m okay,” said Adducul, a three-time NCAA Most Valuable Player during San Sebastian’s five straight titles from 1993 to 1997.

“Masaya ako sa pagtanggap sa akin ng (I’m happy with the reception of) San Sebastian and the NCAA community.”

Despite running a fever, Adducul graced the colorful ceremony along with Philippine basketball greats Atoy Co (Mapua), Chito Loyzaga (San Beda), Philip Cezar (JRU), Samboy Lim (Letran), Bong Hawkins (Perpetual) and current pros Jondan Salvador (St. Benilde) and Nelbert Omolon (PCU).

The 32-year-old Adducul sported a Stags jacket and a red cap in his first public appearance since his diagnosis. He had an intravenous needle pinned on his left hand.

“I’ll be back next (PBA) season,” said Adducul, who rushed back to Cardinal Santos Hospital. The Tuguegarao native already went through four chemotherapy sessions and is scheduled for two more.
