LETRAN GUARD RJ JAZUL emerged as the top individual player a week into NCAA Season 84 by steering the Knights to back-to-back victories and into the early lead in the country’s oldest collegiate basketball league.
One of the veterans tipped to shine because of his experience in the PBL, the 5-foot-11 Jazul from Pasay City lived up to his billing by averaging 25 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals in two games.
His best performance came in the Knights’ 88-75 crushing of St. Benilde Friday when he torched the Blazers for a career-best 37 points, spiked by 7 of 11 shooting from beyond the arc at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Jazul kept the Knights in the game with 21 first-half points as the hot-shooting Blazers threatened to pull away only to waver in the face of Letran’s full-court press.
The win halted the Blazers’ two-game victory run.
“I was surprised with my performance because I never scored more than 23 points before,” said Jazul, who was selected NCAA Press Corps player of the week.
“I really didn’t notice, I just let it fly and I didn’t mind really if it goes in or not because my main focus is to play defense,” added Jazul, who edged San Sebastian’s Jim Viray and St. Benilde’s Archie David, Anjelo Montecastro and Jacob Manlapaz for the weekly honors.
