MANILA, Philippines—Ronald Peña and Oliver Saunders sparked a scoring binge in the first half as the Philippines crushed Brunei, 101-0, at the start of the HSBC Asian 5 Nations Rugby Regional Development Tournament in Dededo, Guam, over the weekend.
Listless in the opening minutes, the Philippines combined power and speed to rip Brunei apart with a series of conversions courtesy of Australian-Filipinos Peña and Saunders at the Wettengel Rugby Field.
The Sydney-based Peña scored on a breakaway in the 18th minute and added two more consecutive goals for four points as the Philippines shrugged off its slow start and built a commanding 19-0 lead midway in the first half.
Brunei, which, at one point got as close as 10 yards from the try line, had several opportunities to light up the boards but bungled them through repeated turnovers.
Saunders then teamed up with Harry Morris, Gareth Holgate and Matthew Saunders to capitalize on Brunei’s errors while executing a handful of well-designed game plans on the other end for a 54-0 lead at the intermission.
The Philippine squad pressed on in the second half with Oliver Saunders putting up 27 of his team’s 47 points on three tries and six conversions.
Desperate for a goal, Brunei opted for kicks from thirty to forty yards out but missed the upright by inches on several occasions.
Guam, which ran roughshod over Brunei in the opener, 74-0, will take on the Philippines in the finals on Monday.
