MANILA, Philippines—World and Asian champion Willy Wang, spearhead of the four-man Philippine wushu team that will compete in the special event in the Olympic Games next month, is capable of bringing home a gold medal.
Julian Camacho, president of the Wushu Federation of the Philippines, gave the fearless forecast Tuesday, even as he tipped the rest of the members of the squad—Benjie Rivera, Mary Jane Estimar and Marian Mariano—to land medals in the Aug. 21 to 24 competitions.
“I’m confident Willy can win his event because of his recent form,” Camacho said.
Wang will compete in the nanquan or forms competition, the same event he ruled in the World Championships in Beijing last year. Rivera, Estimar and Mariano will vie in the sanshou or combat events.
Being a special event, the victories in wushu will not register in the Olympic medal tally.
