MANILA, Philippines—A Filipino duo in dancesport and a high school sepak takraw team from Palawan made their presence felt in two separate international tournaments recently.

John Erolle Melencio and Dearlie Gerodias emerged as the top Asian tandem in the International Dancesport Federation World Cup Latin competition in Shanghai.

The Filipinos ranked 18th in a tough 27-team field ruled by the Italian pair of Stefano Di Fillipo and Anna Milnikova, said Becky Garcia, president of the Dancesport Council of the Philippines.

In Bangkok, the Philippine sepak takraw team, bannered by the Palarong Pambansa champion team from Palawan, finished third in the ASEAN Schools Sepak Takraw Championships.

The Filipinos bowed to Thailand in the semifinals after victories over Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore, according to Philippine Sports Commissioner Eric Loretizo.

Loretizo was in Bangkok at the time of the tournament to attend the ASEAN Schools Sports meeting.
