La Salle, UE thump rivals

MANILA, Philippines—De La Salle University gave Adamson University no room to entertain another upset bid as the Archers coasted past the Falcons, 76-61, Thursday in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball competition at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Led by JV Casio, the Archers opened the game with a strong first half then easily quashed the Falcons’ third-quarter comeback to streak to their fourth straight win and claim solo second at 4-1.

“They gave us a problem, they gave us different looks; I’m just happy that my players were really prepared for any scenario,” said La Salle coach Franz Pumaren.

The Falcons, who were looking for a big follow-up to their stunning win over the University of the East Warriors, dropped to 2-3.

Casio presided in key stretches for the Archers to finish with 19 points, five assists and two steals, while Rico Maierhofer added 13 markers and seven rebounds.

Maui Villanueva, a Japan-trained freshman, contributed 12 points on a 6-of-7 shooting clip.

Regaining its dominating form in the second game, UE roared to an 87-58 rout of University of the Philippines that halted a two-game skid and gave the Warriors a 3-2 slate. The Maroons fell to 1-4 with their fourth straight loss.

Hans Thiele rebounded from a listless performances with 15 points as the Warriors jumped to a 27-12 start and stretched this to a 40-point gap at 81-41.
