MANILA, Philippines—A scion of a legendary boxer shone as La Salle Zobel knocked out fierce rival Ateneo to sweep the first round of the UAAP junior basketball competition over the weekend at the Blue Eagle Gym.
Nico Elorde, the 16-year-old grandson of all-time local boxing great Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, played a brilliant all-around game to power the Junior Archers past the Eaglets in a 77-74 victory that stretched their unbeaten run to seven games.
Elorde, a 5-foot-9 point guard, pumped in 12 of his 24 points from beyond the arc aside from collecting 11 rebounds, five assists and one block as the Junior Archers dealt the Eaglets’ first loss.
Luigi dela Paz also helped the Junior Archers pull off the feat with 15 points, nine boards and five assists.
A junior high school student, the youngest son of boxing promoters Johnny and Liza is the only Elorde to cross over to basketball. His older brothers Bai and Mig are also into pro boxing.
The Eaglets, who settled at solo second with a 6-1 card, leaned on sophomore standout Kiefer Ravena and Juami Tiongson.
Ravena, the son of former PBA Rookie of the Year Bong Ravena, fired 22 points, while Tiongson added 21 markers and nine rebounds for last season’s runner-up.
University of Santo Tomas, Far Eastern University and Adamson University wound up tied at 4-3, followed by National University at 2-5, University of the East at 1-6, while University of the Philippines remained winless in seven games.
FEU also completed a 7-0 sweep in women’s action after the Lady Tamaraws held on to a 51-50 escape over the Lady Archers Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym.
