MANILA, Philippines—John Wilson, Mark Cagoco and Marvin Hayes came out huge for Jose Rizal University (JRU), which defeated Perpetual Help, 51-48, last night and stretched its winning streak to six to become the hottest team in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Hayes barreled strongly for a lay-up before Cagoco and Wilson canned two free throws each in the final two minutes as the Heavy Bombers cemented their place in the second spot with a 6-2 record at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

In the first game, rookie guard Raymond Maconocido rolled the winning lay-up in the final 16 seconds as San Sebastian College edged Mapua Institute of Technology, 64-62.

The 5-foot-8 Maconocido hit a jumper for a 62-61 Stags lead with 42 seconds to go. Mark Sarangay of Mapua split his free throws off a foul by Jason Ballesteros’ next play.

Maconocido then finished a fast-break off the missed free throw to ice the game.

“We played together as a team and that’s really good for us in our effort to reach the Final Four,” San Sebastian coach Jorge Gallent said.

The win jacked the Stags’ win-loss record to 5-4 and allowed them to move to fourth spot, while the Cardinals dropped to fifth with a 4-4 card.

In juniors action, defending champion San Sebastian Staglets unleashed their fury against the hapless Mapua Red Robins, 101-30, while the JRU Light Bombers downed the Perpetual Help Altalettes, 116-95.
