MANILA, Philippines? He has not talked to her yet, but Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Butch Ramirez yesterday said that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is ?not happy? because of the country?s Olympic medal shutout in Beijing.
The PSC head said he heard from very reliable sources of the President?s reaction after the athletes fell, one by one, by the wayside of the road to what was expected to the first ever Olympic gold medal.
The President personally rooted from the sidelines for the 15-member Olympic delegation during the opening ceremony.
The Philippines concluded its disappointing Olympics stint with the first-round loss of Mary Antoinette Rivero to her Croatian foe in the women?s -67kg in taekwondo Friday.
It was the third straight Olympiad that the country went home empty-handed. After Mansueto Velasco won a silver medal in the 1996 Atlanta, the Philippines failed to win a medal in the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Games.
?I take responsibility for it, we at the PSC all take responsibility for it,? said Ramirez via a long distance call from China. ?But everybody must also share the accountability.?
He was referring to the different national sports associations which directly handle the training and development of athletes, and their umbrella organization, the Philippine Olympic Committee.
?You don?t prepare for the Olympics in just four years,? added Ramirez. ?As it is, we only prepared for several months because the PSC has not received money it should be getting.?
