MANILA, Philippines—Junior rivals La Salle Zobel and Ateneo captured the first two UAAP semifinal berths after whipping separate opponents in the high school basketball tournament over the weekend at the Blue Eagle Gym.

Matthew Capacio buried 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to power the defending champion Junior Archers past the National University Bullpups, 102-72, to stay on top at 10-1.

The Blue Eaglets, runners-up last season, also advanced to the Final Four by subduing the University of the East Pages, 98-40, for a 9-2 record.

In women’s play, league-leading Far Eastern University and University of the Philippines similarly posted easy wins to advance to the semifinals.

The Lady Tamaraws trampled on the Lady Eagles, 52-33, with Chovi Borja and Lynne Reyes combining for 21 points in their 10th win in 11 games.

Running second at 9-2, the Lady Maroons turned to Sai Sadorra to coast to a 56-43 triumph over the Amazons.

In high school volleyball, defending champion University of the East completed a five-game sweep by overpowering La Salle Zobel, 25-14, 25-6, 25-16, at the end of first round action in the boys division.

University of Santo Tomas matched the feat in girls action by edging UE, 25-17, 25-20, 25-22, for a 3-0 record.
