MANILA, Philippines?Delayed or otherwise, The Philippine Basketball Association will not renege on its commitment to help form the Philippine national cage team.
This was the promise made by PBA board chair Joaqui Trillo of Alaska Tuesday, a day after the league sounded as if it was dilly-dallying on its commitment by deferring the announcement of the national coach.
?The league (PBA) made a commitment to name the coach, to form the team and to compete in the FIBA-Asia (tournament), and we will honor that commitment,? Trillo said over the phone, in reaction to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala?s statement Monday.
League commissioner Renauld Barrios deferred naming the coach in a press conference on Monday, opting instead to wait for the resolution of a legal battle between the SBP and the Philippine Olympic Committee-expelled Basketball Association of the Philippines.
That development obviously did not sit well with Eala, also a former PBA commissioner, who said that the legal battle between SBP and the BAP was ?totally not a related issue (with the PBA).?
?It shows inconsistency with the SBP where the PBA is a member,? added Eala. ?We?re confident with the case which the SBP appealed.
?I don?t know where that feeling of his (Barrios) is coming from, but that decision (of deferring the naming) doesn?t speak well. It?s not his concern.?
Trillo said Barrios ?was just trying to be cautious? when he decided to postpone naming the coach, which, according to sources, is up for grabs among prime candidates Tim Cone of Alaska, Barangay Ginebra?s Jong Uichico, Talk ?N Text?s Chot Reyes and Red Bull?s Yeng Guiao.
On Monday, the SBP secured a 60-day temporary restraining order (TRO) from the Court of Appeals stopping a Manila Regional Trial Court from implementing a ruling that the June 12 election of Manny Pangilinan as chair of the SBP was ?null and void.?
Eala reiterated that the SBP continues to enjoy recognition of the POC and the world governing body for the sport, FIBA.
